Serene started learning the piano at the early age of 3 years old. She continued her music studies at Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts, also picking up the ancient traditional music of the Indonesian Gamelan during her stint there. Upon graduating, she started teaching the piano as well as performing.
Serene is a multi-instrumentalist, having performed on the piano, various gamelan instruments as well as percussion instruments. She has performed for American President George Bush, President SR Nathan as well as most recently for Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the opening of the Malay Heritage Centre.
Serene is also the Artistic Director of fusion gamelan group GammaRays as well as world music band TiGaia. She has also performed at international music festivals such as the Brave Festival in Poland, Yogjakarta Gamelan Festival in Indonesia and the Jeon-Ju Sori Festival in Korea.
Serene has been the music director and sound designer for Esplanade's Playtime series (theatre for children aged between 2 to 4 years of age) since 2009 and most recently composed the music for Moon Balloon which was showcased at Esplanade's Octoburst Festival 2013. She has travelled with children's theatre groups, providing live music soundscapes and performed twice at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as at the Kuala Lumpur Children's Festival.
Throughout her music journey, Serene has entertained and performed for countless audiences of children, taught the piano and other instruments like the angklung, gamelan, tubulum and percussion to many classes of students, and gained invaluable experience and knowledge along the way. With more than 15 years of teaching and performing under her belt, she has come up with a pedagogical concept for little kids that is both unique and engaging for little minds.
